Home Cholesterol Tests - Are They Accurate Enough?

Regular testing is one of the best ways to keep your cholesterol levels in a healthy range. But having frequent tests done by a lab or in a doctor's office can be inconvenient.

Fortunately, home cholesterol test kits and monitors are now widely available. They can be bought at your pharmacy, or online through reputable providers.

You'll need to gain an understanding of what the resulting numbers mean before you begin testing. This will also help you set some goals are in terms of LDL (low density lipoproteins) and HDL (high density lipoproteins).

LDL, or "bad" cholesterol, accumulates on the walls of your arteries and can lead to serious health problems, including hardening of the arteries, heart disease and stroke. Optimal LDL levels are below 100 mg/dL.

HDL, or "good" cholesterol, latches onto LDL carries it to the liver for disposal. Obviously, the higher your HDL reading, the better. Optimal levels for HDL are 60mg/dL or higher.

Home kits are approved by the FDA, are available over the counter, and have reliability rates, or accuracy rates, of 97%. You can expect to pay about $25 for a package of two test kits. Test kits are available individually, as well, but for regular testing, it makes more sense to buy the twin pack.

When you buy a home testing kit, you'll be taking a tiny sample of your own blood. Each test kit includes a lancet for sticking your finger and test strips to test your blood. These tests are easy to administer, contain full instructions, and are easy to read.

Home kits are not as reliable as professional testing, but by checking regularly on your own schedule, you will be able to monitor your levels and make adjustments to your diet as needed, or see your doctor when necessary.

Keep in mind that if your home test shows a high blood cholesterol level and you consult your doctor, he or she will order a lab test to confirm your results.
