Dangers of High Blood Cholesterol for Women

Most people mistakenly believe that breast cancer kills more women than any other health problem in America. It's not true. Heart disease is the most frequent cause of unexpected death among American women as well as men.

In fact, more women die each year of heart disease than men, according to the American Heart Association.

Women face some special challenges in controlling their high blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure, which is a major risk factor in heart trouble.

Women with a high blood pressure problem are more likely to have high cholesterol and be obese. Research shows they're more likely than men to miss target blood pressure goals.

The American Heart Association has an ongoing program for women called "Go Red for Women." The goal is to change the perception that high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease are mainly threats to men.

Nearly one in three Americans suffers from high blood pressure -- more than 73 million adults.
